Places to visit in New Zealand
Milford Sound
One of New Zealand's most famous attractions is Milford Sound, a spectacular fjord on the west coast of the South Island. Here you will find a stunning coastal landscape with high mountains, sheer cliffs and waterfalls surrounding an inky black sea. During the ice ages, glaciers formed this 'eighth wonder of the world', as the New Zealanders like to call it. Especially when it rains, the waterfalls thunder down as much as one kilometre. And it often does, as this is the wettest place in New Zealand.
You can explore Milford Sound with a boat trip - during the day or at night. More adventurous types can explore the fjord by kayak. That's the greatest chance of spotting local marine animals, including dolphins and seals. Or opt for a sightseeing flight to see the breathtaking landscape from the air. At the Underwater Observatory, you can see the underwater world from behind glass. Milford Sound is part of Fiordland National Park and can be reached via the 4-day Milford Track, New Zealand's most popular hiking trail. Website: www.fiordland.org.nz
Christchurch
Christchurch is the largest city on the South Island as well as New Zealand's oldest city. As early as 1856, the city was founded by European whalers. Many Gothic and Edwardian-style buildings were built in the city, making Christchurch the most English city in New Zealand. After two major earthquakes in 2010 and 2011, many historic buildings were destroyed, but Christchurch is now full of hope and vibrancy again. Bay of Islands
There is no place in New Zealand where you can experience the island feeling quite like the Bay of Islands. It is a paradise archipelago of 144 islets with secluded bays, golden beaches, stunning rock formations and pristine forests. The waters abound with marine life, with penguins, dolphins, marlins, whales and gannets. The islands have numerous trails on which you can hike, or explore the water with a cruise, a diving trip or renting a sea kayak. The Bay Islands are a popular anchorage for yachts and sailboats, and anglers also know this spot well. These islets are about 3 hours' drive north of Auckland.
Auckland
Auckland is New Zealand's largest city and is located on the North Island. The city lies on an extinct volcanic field and you will therefore find several volcanic islands, lakes and lagoons in the region. There are dozens of activities to do in this seemingly grey and drab city. For example, visit the Auckland Museum or Auckland Zoo, take a dinner cruise or go sailing. One of the top attractions is the Sky Tower, a telecommunications tower 328 metres high where phenomenal views of the city await you. You'll also enjoy the view with a hike to the top of Mount Eden, Auckland's tallest volcanic cone. ► Read more about the sights in Auckland here
